To search for Supreme Court cases by plaintiff, go to the clerks minutes at the service counter. These large books are set up by first letter of the last name. You then turn to the page of the first letter of the first name [tabs are on the right] and search down the appropriate column. If you find a case the index number will be noted along with the defendant, date, etc. You need the index number and date to obtain the file. To do a complete search, go to the next oldest letter book which will be on the racks behind the service counter.

To check for judgments against an individual or a corporation, go to the judgment computers located in the same room. Instruction for their use are in Chapter Two, "Filing Systems". To search further back, the judgment books are near the clerks minutes. Research is like other boroughs. Be sure to check the books with the recent judgments which are on racks near the main judgment racks.

To search for a corporation or business name, go upstairs within room 118 to the mezzanine level. There is a room at the top of the stairs with a sign "Business Certificates/Incorporations/Miscellaneous Records". There are card files which describe the years covered and the type of record. The listings are alphabetical. If you find a record you want to examine, fill out a requisition slip with the information on the card. The files are kept in the back. The clerk will bring you the file. Copies can be made.

To obtain copies of a case you found in the clerks minutes, go across the floor from the business record room to the file room. Fill out a requisition and the file will be made available. Copying machines are available.
