Very useful for getting the names of principals for small businesses. Most mid-sized and up businesses are represented. Many small enterprises included, too. Company will try to check out a company for you if you ask, and pay for it. Report includes some bill paying information. Usually includes if business owns or rents, and lists approximate square footage. Has history of principals. Major drawback is that most information is supplied by the business itself. Service is easily accessed by personal computer but can be obtained by phone. Cost is approximately $25.00-$50.00 per report. Odd aspect of the service is that you must pay for a year's worth in advance. This service can be cost effective.

Trans Union Credit & TRW Credit

Service is very fast, as little as 5 minutes. Best available from local credit agencies. Can be obtained directly from Trans Union Credit & TRW Credit but very high set up costs, deposits, minimum usage, etc. Can only be tapped if there is a credit or lending purpose or with person's permission. Best to get permission in writing. Many agencies require a business relationship with persons asking for reports. Many local credit agencies are found in the yellow pages. Each has a computer link-up with either major company. Costs vary but expect to pay $10-15 per request. Don't lend without one. Good for banking and credit card profile. Usually lists a mortgage on a principal residence. Amounts and payment profile listed. Can also pick up prior addresses and employers. Services can pick up judgements. Weak on lawsuits that are settled. Not useful for checking or evaluating persons who own cash based businesses and eschew credit buying. New immigrant groups may not be represented in significant numbers. Be very careful with common names that are requested without date of birth or social security number. Do not use the credit service to find people.
